Angela O. Bates, a Nicodemus descendant and historian, is the executive director and founder of the Nicodemus Historical Society. Working with the Nicodemus community, the National Park Service, and Senators Dole and Roberts, she helped designate Nicodemus as a National Historic Site. Angela presents educational programs to cultural organizations across the nation covering the history of Nicodemus, Exodusters and black towns in the West, Buffalo Soldiers, and black women in the West. Her series of children’s books, Adventures of Nicodemus Annie, focus on the history of Nicodemus. Angela joined the Humanities Speakers Bureau in 2010

Nicodemus, a small, unincorporated town in Graham County, is the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War. Today the town is a National Historic Site. This pictorial history explores the unique experience of mothers and their children in Nicodemus, some of whom were the first members of their families born free. This discussion will explore the dynamics of child-rearing during and after slavery, stories of children conceived in slavery but born free, and the contrast of life and decisions based on the simple concept of 'choice,' which freedom afforded.

Online Program - The Long Road to Women's Suffrage in Kansas

Presented by Diane Eickoff*

Kansas was historically a leader in women's rights, being just the eighth state to grant female suffrage. Yet the campaign for voting rights in Kansas required more than half a century of determined effort, as women suffered discouraging setbacks in three different statewide initiatives. How did they ultimately persuade an all-male electorate to grant them their rights? What did their long ordeal teach them about perseverance and politics? This presentation will explore the courageous individuals who took on the powerful interests opposed to electoral reform and discover other firsts that Kansas women achieved on the road to full suffrage.

*Diane will be co-presenting with her husband Aaron Barnhart, who is also a member of the Speakers Bureau for Humanities Kansas.

This event will take place online! Contact Pam Shelton for more information.

The Smithsonian Crossroads Exhibit: Change in Rural America

Norton, KS-- Norton County Arts Council in Norton is hosting “Crossroads: Change in Rural America,” a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition. “Crossroads” will be in Norton from May 1, 2021  to June 13, 2021, at the Historic Heaton Building in the Gloria Nelson Cultural Arts Center located at 112 S Kansas Avenue. The “Crossroads” Kansas tour is sponsored by Humanities Kansas in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program.

Norton County Arts Council will build on the photographs, hands-on activities, and audio and video clips provided by the Smithsonian in the “Crossroads” exhibition to tell the history and culture of local rural life in Kansas and spark conversations about our state’s future.

“Crossroads” tours six Kansas communities in 2020-2021. Other Smithsonian hosts include Bowlus Fine Arts Center/Allen County Historical Society, Iola; 5.4.7 Arts Center, Greensburg; Kauffman Museum, North Newton; Independence Public Library/Independence Historical Museum and Art Center; and The Volland Store, Alma.

“Through a partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program, Humanities Kansas is able to bring the resources of the nation’s premier cultural institution to Kansas,“ said Julie Mulvihill, executive director of Humanities Kansas. “The six communities were selected because of the inspired plans provided by local organizations to use the national exhibition as a springboard to explore local stories of innovation and adaptation.”

In addition to the six sites hosting the Smithsonian, eight communities will create their own exhibitions and programming to explore what it means to live rural in the 21st century, the relationship between rural, suburban, and urban, and the progress and persistence needed by communities of all sizes to thrive. Participating communities include Ellinwood, Hays, Lebanon, Colby, El Dorado, Council Grove, Onaga, and Olathe.

Humanities Kansas sponsors the “Crossroads: Change in Rural America” initiative in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program, a one-of-a-kind cultural project that serves small towns and residents of rural communities. About Sky Smeed
Rooted in the southeastern Kansas Folk, Blues, Country, and Rock traditions Sky's creations of Americana music are exceptional, delightful and passionate. Sky is patient with his music and songs. While some artists whiz through songs in a Dylanesque fashion leaving an array of near misses in their wake, Smeed takes the time and effort of learning the nuances of his own songs and interacts with them until they become, very simply, part of him and who he is and what he presents on stage and in recordings. He is an amazing song writer, but perhaps more importantly he is a deliberate and finessed song interpreter. He finds the heart of songs, which others might leave buried in the lyrics or music, and brings their beauty to our senses.
